The forests of the Loir Valley

A trip to the great outdoors reveals a kaleidoscope of landscapes that are the lifeblood and identity of the Vallée du Loir. Small picturesque valleys, vast fields of crops, hillsides of vines or orchards, a contrasting countryside is revealed. Over the course of time, geological upheavals, climate and mankind have shaped this land, giving expression to the diversity, richness and beauty of its landscapes. The Loir Valley is also home to some remarkable oak, pine, poplar and chestnut trees. They cover ¼ of the area and form a link in the landscape with the bocage.

The Bercé forest a remarkable natural and forestry heritage

An exceptional natural heritage, the Bercé State Forest covers 5,400 hectares. Classified as a Royal Forest in the 14th century, it is one of the finest oak reserves in France, with quality woods that are highly sought after, in particular oaks that are over 200 years old and used for cooperage. These giants, symbols of majesty and durability, were even selected to help rebuild the framework of Notre-Dame de Paris, perpetuating their history beyond the forest.

The green lung of the Loir Valley, this national forest is managed by the Office National des Forêts and is also a veritable reservoir of natural riches, with a variety of environments that encourage a diversity of species.

Emblematic sites to discover

To see for yourself, don’t miss the “Futaie des Clos”, with specimens over 300 years old and up to 50 m high, as well as some very fine maritime pines and softwoods such as Douglas fir and Laricio pine.

Two other sites in the Bercé forest are very popular with visitors: the Coudre fountain and the Vallon de L’Hermitière. A hiking trail called “A la découverte de la forêt” links these two flagship sites.

The Bercé forest is also criss-crossed by a series of signposted footpaths and mountain bike trails. These are a great way to discover the surrounding villages and countryside. A number of reception areas are available for walkers to take a well-earned break and enjoy a family picnic.

Carnuta, House of Man and Forest

On the edge of the Bercé forest, Carnuta, a fun and interactive place in the heart of the village of Jupilles, invites you to discover the world of the forest.

The original, atypical architecture of this all-wood building will plunge you into the world of forestry as soon as you arrive: chestnut shingle façade, birch branches for decoration…

The wildlife is presented through sounds, images, smells, games and models. Forestry and the trades involved in forestry and wood processing are highlighted using tools, videos and personal accounts. Young and old alike, come and take a journey among the tall, centuries-old oaks, while awakening your 5 senses.

The Chadelais Forest

In the Loir valley, you can also discover other forest areas.

Near Baugé in Anjou, the Chandelais forest is the most remarkable in Anjou, covering more than 1,034 hectares and consisting mainly of oak and beech trees. This state-owned forest, managed by the Office National des Forêts, boasts a highly diverse environment, remarkable forest wildlife and a wide variety of mushrooms.
