église XIe - Prieuré XVe

72500 Saint-Pierre-de-Chevillé

Description

An 11th-century church dating from the transition from Romanesque to Gothic, with a soaring bell tower.
Adjoining the church is the presbytery, a former priory built at the end of the 15th century. The building, which belonged to Vaas Abbey, was abandoned. Thanks to Abbé Boulay, who was appointed to Saint Pierre in 1953 and is still in charge, the former priory was restored and the presbytery opened in 1975. The church and presbytery are among the local treasures, and are listed as Historic Monuments. The priory features machicolations and stained glass windows. Seven loopholes in the tower, hemmed in with tufa blocks, were once used to keep watch over strategic points. The roof structure is a masterpiece of interlocking beams.
