Description
Orphée - L'œuvre retrouvée de Desbois" exhibition at Parçay-Les-Pins
Jules Desbois' career took off when he was just twenty years old. One sculpture in particular caught the eye at the 1875 Salon: Orpheus, a work in plaster that impressed as much for its size as for its technical quality. This first success, which received a prize as well as a state purchase, unfortunately fell into oblivion a few decades later, and was considered lost after 1945.
This early work by Desbois remained virtually unknown until it was rediscovered in 2023 in Château-Gontier.
This exhibition explores the youth of Jules-Desbois, presenting both the artist's work and its development over time, through a comparison with the collections of the Musée Jules-Desbois.
Damaged by time, Orphée will undergo a series of restorations throughout the season, some of which will be open to the public, in order to restore this early work by the artist to its full splendour.
