With its 1,353 inhabitants, Vieil-Baugé is one of the richest communes in the history of the Baugeois.
Vieil-Baugé was the site of the 1421 battle between the English and the French, who were themselves allied with the Scots. The town's coat of arms still bears witness to this victory. "Le pas de la mule" is part of the legend that has grown up around these battles. Take the narrow streets leading from the church square and, at the bottom of a cobbled street, you'll discover the charm of the wash-house and the old buildings. The relaxation area, with its lake and picnic area, is a great place to stroll and enjoy a good time. You can also take a stroll along the banks of the Couasnon, where 12 mills once operated, and from where you can see the church of St Symphorien with its oddly twisted bell tower.
