Description

Churches with Torn Spires: Natural or architectural feats
The Baugeois region has the highest concentration of Tors bell towers in France. They can be found in the communes of Fontaine Guérin, Fougeré, Le Vieil Baugé, Pontigné, Mouliherne and Jarzé. Some steeples are deliberately twisted, while others are twisted by accident, but which are they? .... The bell tower at Pontigné has a perfect spiral, the one at Vieil Baugé is both twisted AND leaning, and the one at Fontaine Guérin turns from left to right, unlike the others. All this is still very mysterious, and there are many legends surrounding these twisted bell towers:-The Vieil-Baugé spire is said to have been twisted by the hand of the devil. -Two twins were married in Le Vieil-Baugé and, when they kissed in front of the church, their husbands, thinking they were kissing their wives, mistook the binoculars and the steeple burst into laughter. Now it's up to you to make up your own mind.
