Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose) by Richard Strauss
Der Rosenkavalier is the most romantic opera ever written. The story is universal, but it is told with poignant beauty and exquisite sensitivity. A young boy is gripped by a violent passion for an older woman, under the spell of her self-assured elegance and wisdom. Inevitably, he moves from a calf's love to a mature and protective love for a vulnerable young girl. He doesn't understand how this happens to him, but his first love understands and forgives him.
The opera, whose opulent, shimmering music was composed in 1900, is set in Empress Maria Theresa's Vienna, a city at the height of its splendour.
The Marschallin is sung by the Portuguese soprano Susana Gaspar. Volodymyr Morozov plays the turbulent Baron Ochs, Karlene Moreno-Hayworth Sophie and James Roser her father. Monika-Evelin Liiv plays Annina and Alexander Pidgen is Valzacchi. All will be kept firmly in order by Denis Sedov as the police inspector. Expect to laugh, cry and gasp.
Opéra de Baugé conductor Konstantinos Diminakis is our resident Viennese expert. We will be presenting the world premiere of a new reduced score.
